It’s an aromatic start to the day, a midday work break, a catch up with a friend and a post-dinner digestive. For some, coffee is a  personal luxury, a chance to slow down, for some it’s the opposite – a much-needed caffeine kick from their cup of joe taken to go. There are many ways of preparing it, and more than a few schools of thought on grinding and drinking it.  To name a few – French press, drip, cold brew or Turkish coffee.

What’s certain is that the customs around coffee drinking vary from country to country.

Studies show that the nation that drinks the most coffee per capita is Finland, with an average of 26.45 pounds of coffee consumed per person per year. While European nations occupy the top spots in world rankings, it is the Scandinavians that seem to be at the top in terms of coffee consumption. For perspective, Italians drink 13 pounds a year, the Lebanese 10.58 and in the US it’s 9.26 – barely making the 20th spot globally!

But before coffee ends up in our cups and fills our noses with its familiar,  fragrance, it grows on plants. Coffee was discovered around 1000 B.C. in Ethiopia. What we think of as modern coffee drinking only dates back to around the 15th century.

In general, the coffee we drink comes from around 20 countries. Its country of origin impacts the flavour–also known as the flavour profile–for example Brazilian beans tend to be more chocolatey, while Kenyan ones are more acidic, sometimes compared to a blackcurrant flavour.

With moderate and conscious intake, coffee has immense health benefits. It’s good for the body and the mind. Caffeine affects our central nervous system. Not only can it improve alertness and boost physical performance, it also regulates blood sugar levels, while protecting your brain and immune system!
