How to tell if socks are good quality?

How to tell if socks are good quality?

Ever stood in a shop wondering what your socks are actually made of, and why it matters? We're putting sock composition under the microscope to demystify the materials and help you find your perfect pair.

Let's start with the basics: socks can be made from a wide variety of materials. The most common you'll find are cotton, wool, nylon, acrylic, polyester, olefin, and spandex. Less common, mainly due to their higher price, are socks made from luxury materials like silk, linen, cashmere, or mohair, which customers value above all for their exceptional softness.

So, this leads to the big question: how to tell if socks are good quality? The answer isn't simple, because "good" is a subjective term. The right choice of sock material depends on many aspects. For some people, the intended use of the product is the most important factor. For others, it's durability and moisture-wicking properties. And then there are those who are guided by price, or who will always choose a specific length.

Cotton socks are a staple you'll find in almost everyone's drawer. As a material, cotton is prized for its softness, natural feel, and breathability. Pure cotton fibres, without being mixed with other materials, are also fully biodegradable, which is a huge plus for the environmentally conscious. But are these advantages enough to say that good socks should be made of 100% cotton? The answer is: no. As sock experts, we decided it was time to weigh in on the matter.

Even the highest quality cotton isn't perfect. While it absorbs moisture with ease, it doesn't effectively wick it away to the outside. When wet, it becomes heavy and takes a long time to dry. In high temperatures, this can lead to chafing and blisters on your feet, while in winter, wet cotton loses its thermoregulating properties and stops keeping you warm. When it comes to sock composition—just like with most things in life—a balanced blend is key. Cotton should go hand-in-hand with other materials that give the sock elasticity. This ensures greater comfort for your feet and safety during wear.

At Rainbow Socks, the quality of our socks is a top priority. We use OEKO-TEX certified materials in our production, which gives us confidence that our socks are free from harmful substances. We know the advantages of cotton, and through our own testing, we've determined the ideal composition for cotton socks: 80% cotton, 17% polyamide, and 3% elastane. Knowing the composition is a key part of how to tell if socks are good quality, and this is the exact blend you'll find in our gift socks and our everyday socks for you.

As our second main component, we chose polyamide, as its durability and softness are superior to polyester. This 17% of the blend is crucial: it transports moisture to the outside of the fabric and ensures the sock's longevity, which directly counteracts the disadvantages of pure cotton. Polyamide means the sock not only dries faster but can also be worn for a long time—even after many washes—as it resists wear and tear. The remaining 3% of the Rainbow Socks composition is Elastane, which is responsible for their elasticity. Thanks to this fibre, our socks maintain their proper shape and don't stretch out over time. This carefully balanced blend is our expert answer to the question, what type of material is best for socks?—one that combines the best of all worlds for comfort, durability, and a perfect fit.

We think so, but the best way to be sure is to try a pair on for size!
