Valentine's Day reportedly stems from the pagan fertility festivities in Ancient Rome, which largely consisted of spanking each other, drinking wine, and having fun (not really about gifts, we know, be patient). But the tradition of sending Valentine's cards dates back to the 15th century, and the first love poem was written... as early as 3500 BC.
