Why do we need to keep moving? What are the benefits of sports? In a nutshell, physical activity is good for everyone, for all sorts of reasons. Sport psychology experts find that sporting activities boost both the general physical fitness as well as specific muscle groups but most importantly for our day and age – our mental health.
How does that happen? In a world where we all run around in mad panic and the mental health crisis is a global affair – sport is the answer. Sport helps manage stress and release tension, supporting the production of endorphins–happiness hormones–and reducing the level of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which makes us feel tense. Sport in itself is calming, takes our mind off the day-to-day hardships, can be a team-building experience, a hobby, or a very much needed personal achievement. Sport is also a prescribed medicine that can help manage or banish depression or anxiety.
Sport is…life. And there are so many options to choose from; anyone’s abilities can be catered to, preferences accounted for. Running, cycling, basketball, yoga, dancing, all help return us to health. It is not true that you need special equipment. The first and pretty much only rule is – you have to show up.
